Summary/Abstract: The text is an abridged version of the graduate thesis of the same title. The thesis was defended on Sept 30 2015, at the Department of the Literatures of the Peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo, and its main intention is to ‘unlock’ a poetic cycle by Vasko Popa called „Vertical country“ by thorough reading and interpretation of symbols. After the conclusion that most literary critics approached this work of Popa superficially, this thesis interprets each poem of the cycle in the manner of close reading, verse-by-verse, along with the discovery of meaning of symbols with that relation to structure of poems. The result is a detailed and extensive, but also precise and useful analysis, especially to teachers willing to devote time to Popa’s poetry. It is a thorough interpretation based on mythological and historical explanation of symbols and motifs.
