The Role of Workload Perception in the Effect of Job Insecurity on Burnout

Summary/Abstract: Purpose – Working life is changing and developing day by day due to increasing competition and technological factors. This change brings along also some negativiy for the employees. Job insecurity and increased workload are the main ones. Burnout may also develop in employees who have a perception of insecurity and workload related to their job. In this study, the interaction among the concepts of job insecurity, workload and burnout in motorcycle couriers working in companies performing door delivery application was tried to be determined. Design/methodology/approach – In this context, a survey was conducted with 151 moto couriers in Şişli, İstanbul. Before analyzing the data obtained within the scope of the study, confirmatory factor analysis was performed to test the structural validity and reliability and fit indices of the scales used in the study. After this stage, the data were analyzed by structural equation modeling. Findings – According to the results of the research, it was determined that job insecurity, burnout affected the perception of workload just as the workload perception had an impact on burnout. Finally, the full mediating role of workload perception in the effect of job insecurity on burnout has been determined. Discussion – Psychological satisfaction is an important element in working life. Therefore, it is important to know the effects of workload and job insecurity perceptions. Concepts such as job insecurity and workload may cause burnout in employees. For organizational success and employee welfare, it would be beneficial to reduce the perception of job insecurity and workload.
