Summary/Abstract: The reviewed book describes the specifics of ageing in rural areas in Bohemia and Moravia. Its significance lies in the empirically-based analysis of the influence of the rural environment on various ageing processes. The book describes the issue of the „urban determined hegemony“ from various perspectives, concerning which even seemingly objective scales that assess the friendliness of the environment refer only marginally to the non-urban environment. The concept of „active ageing“ is also questioned since it takes into account principally „urban“ activities (e.g. participation in educational courses and group exercises) rather than the interests of rural inhabitants that generally comprise an integral part of independent living in country areas. The main limit of the book is that older and less self-sufficient seniors make up only a small proportion of the respondents. The book can be recommended both to social and academic workers who are involved in addressing the issue of ageing and representatives of local and smaller municipality authorities.
