Summary/Abstract: Which existing things actually fall within the scope of a science can be directly determined by pointing out the specific class of phenomena that are the object of no other science but this. Hence, sociology is neither a science of society nor a science of man, nor a science of culture. The task of sociology is only to study social systems. The separation of social actions from other cultural actions gives rise to problems, but without such a structuring of cultural reality and without narrowing down the scope of the social, sociology would not be thinkable as a science about the order of social action. This capacity of self-limitation is the measure of the maturity of science in general and of sociology in particular.
