Summary/Abstract: Following the Crimean War, the three counties of southern Bessarabia - Cahul, Bolgrad, and Ismail - were transferred to the Principality of Moldavia. Of the 200 settlements in this area, 40 were officially registered as Bulgarian-Gagaouz colonies, having about 49,000 settlers. Other Gagaouz colonies remained within the Russian Empire. We make a brief comparison between the parallel circumstances that these two types of communities experienced under the socio-political determinations of the two sides of the border.
