Summary/Abstract: Andrei Ciurunga was and still is a popular name of the anti-Communist resistance in the political prisons. In his poems, he reproduced the measure of the sufferings endured by his generation on the Danube-Black Sea Canal, for which he was titled «a Poet of the Canal» during his detention. However, so far no study has been published to capitalize the information provided in the documents drafted by Securitate, the political police of the Romanian Communist regime. Therefore, our goal is to restore the poet’s biography as a whole, using mainly this archival source, and secondarily the memories of former political prisoners who knew him closely. In particular, we will reconstruct his lesser known biographical periods, namely those before and after political detentions. We will also render the overall image of the creation, dissemination, rescue, and publication of his prison poems.
