The Technique of Variants at Tacit (Annales I-VI)

Summary/Abstract: In the present paper we highlight some of the modalities which pertain to style, to the manner of writing, by which Tacitus succeeds in imposing on his readers (in the first six books of the Annales) a certain point of view, in a way which is not at all evident. I have proposed, as the foremost method of accomplishing this goal, a so-called technique of variants. After inventoring these variants, I have tried to group them and to emphasize the effects obtained through each category.
