An Examination of The Sports Environments and Sports Participation of Secondary School Students and The Factors That Prevent Their Participation (The Case of Şanlıurfa Province)

Summary/Abstract: The research was carried out to examine the physical education and sports environments of secondary school students, their participation in sports and the factors that prevent their participation. The research is a research in scanning model. The population of the study consists of the students studying at secondary schools in Şanlıurfa in the 2018-2019 academic year, and the sample consists of 994 students selected randomly from these students. The data in the study were obtained by the survey method. The comprehensibility, content validity and reliability of the questionnaire were provided. Cronbach's Alpha reliability coefficient of the questionnaire was found to be 0.809. The questionnaires were applied by meeting the participants one-on-one. In this way, a total of 994 individuals, 567 women and 427 men, participated in the surveys. Frequency (%), cross table (crosstab) and chi-square X2 and Independent Samples T-tests were performed on the data obtained as a statistical process. According to the results of the study, the participants' schools do not have enough sports environment, in terms of sports environment, schools in the city center are more advantageous than the schools in the districts. It can be said that the factors preventing participation in sports are due to the insufficiency or lack of the district area and facilities to do sports. While there were no statistically significant differences at 0.05 significance level in the gender variable, statistically significant differences were found in the location, province and district variables of the schools (p <0.05).
