A Lesson in Dignity, a Lesson in the Human Spirit by Józef Czapski

Summary/Abstract: The starting point of this article is the question what permanent and timeless elements are contained in the heritage of Józef Czapski – the painter and writer. Examples of relations between the artist’s biography and work in his last years are shown. The idea of the article is to present how Czapski expressed his interest in different aspects of the human spirit, which was certainly the basis for his decisions and activity. This aspect also influenced the perspective applied when describing his painting Lustro na drewnianych drzwiach (the mirror on the wooden door) – an evident example of metaphysical painting.
