Summary/Abstract: A prominent personality of the late Antiquity, Father Hieronymus is considered by the modern scholars as being the most important philologist and translator of the Bible, from the Patristic period, but also an artist of the portrait, his literary portraits being expressions of the social realities of the second half of the 4th century. Hieronymus has mastered the art of the literary portrait from the works of the great classical authors whom he studied with a lot of passion. The personalities portrayed by Hieronymus are different: historians, rhetors, bishops, priests, philosophers, deacons, praetors or honoured saints like Paul, Malcus, Ilarion. The portraits prezented by him have a great historical value due to the unique information about some pagan or Christian writers. His work, De viris illustribus, which enjoyed great success in the coming centuries, is one of the few works translated from Latin to Greek.
