Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to analyze foreign Turkish learners’ use of the language elements: verbal noun affixes and verbal adverb structures in written expression, which are suffixed onto verbs and do not make permanent term significations on the verb, and to reveal how they made use of these elements. This study was conducted using the document analysis method, which is one of the qualitative research methods. The study group consisted of 100 students learning Turkish at B2 level in 2016-2017 academic year at DILMER, Istanbul University. The study group was selected by means of criterion sampling, one of the purposive sampling methods. The functional language elements were classified via the data obtained from the students' written expression papers. Content analysis method was employed in data analysis. It was confirmed that students who learn Turkish as a foreign language used functional language elements based on a total of 793 verbs. 129 of these were used incorrectly while 664 were used correctly. It was determined that the students mostly used the functional language elements correctly. At the end of the study, the students’ who learn Turkish as a second language use of language elements that are suffixed onto verbs was found out. It was concluded that the usage frequency of the word types used by the students is directly proportional to the misuse.
