Summary/Abstract: The majority of Czechs and Slovaks longed for the departure of the Soviet soldiers in the decades following August 1968. However, this could only come about owing to the foreign policy development in the latter half of the 1980s and especially after the downfall of the communist regime in November 1989. The departure, however, was preceded by a partial withdrawal of troops as a consequence of the negotiations between the USA and the Soviet Union as well as a unilateral decision by the Soviet leadership.
