Irregular Georgian Migrants with(out) Local Governments in the Eastern Black Sea Region, Turkey

Summary/Abstract: Since the last quarter of the 20th century, irregular migration movements towards Turkey has shown a quantitative increase depending on the developments in the global and regional level such as wars, invasions, economic crisis and internal conflicts. Considering the statistics of the Directorate General of Migration Management (GİGM) in 2019, within the borders of Turkey the number of reported irregular migrants was 454 662. The main purpose of this study, which was prepared based on a phenomenological research conducted to discover the experiences of irregular Georgian migrants in the Eastern Black Sea Region, is to investigate the migrants’ experiences and expectations in their relations with local governments. The data obtained from in-depth interviews which were conducted through a semi-structured form with a total of 48 participants between 15 June and 15 August in 2018 were analyzed by following the seven stage of phenomenological data analysis process. According to the findings, it is seen that the irregular migrants who sometimes put their workforce in return for the wages based on the demands of the municipalities in line with the spirit of capitalism, also from time to time get jobs from the municipalities in agreement with the spirit of nepotism.
