The historical novel of The White Lady of Levoča in Slovak translations

Summary/Abstract: In the study, Jókai Mór‘s The White Lady of Levoča novel in a Slovak translation has been examined and compared. Jókai is one of the most significant representatives of Hungarian novel literature, his novels have also achieved great success abroad, and they have been translated into many languages. Jókai was writing the novel “The White Lady of Levoča” based on a legend. The novel portraits the life of Korponayné Ghéczy Julianna, her psychological development, how a traitor become a national hero. The novel gives us an insight into the last month of the Rákóczi War of Independence and the period after its ending. The Slovak translations may be interesting for the Slovak readers, mostly because the novel's plot takes place mainly in the territory of today's Slovakia. In my study I examine Valéria Pařiková and Alfred Engelmann translations. I examine two versions of Pařiková‘s translation, and I also compare them separately. I cover the translation of surnames, first names place names and foreign words and he use of terms “Madar” and “Uhor”.
