Summary/Abstract: The article investigates the problem of functioning of Russian national myths, first of all eschatological and literary, in the prose of contemporary “neorealism” (on the basis of the novel Kish by T. Tolstoy). The article attempts to disclose the sources and structure of the myths, specifics of their development in the texts, which accomplish the culture of the 20th century; also, the interplay with the former fiction tradition. The novel Kish is interpreted in the framework of postmodern creative paradigm and it is claimed that while destroying and mocking cultural mythologemes of the past, the author does not deconstruct the utopia of the language; moreover, he becomes a true hero. A. S. Pushkin appears to be the main character of the literary myth. The image of the national poet signifies the borders of semantic space within the text. The poetry of the genius, which appears to be different every time, evokes a feeling of something greater than just the absurd of the present. According to Nabokov, the pronounced word or rhythm are considered as the elements of the meaning.
