Summary/Abstract: The present paper attempts to act in accordance with the tenets recently formulated by the Romanian Commission for Urban History regarding the early history of Câmpulung. Among the many complex issues raised by the genesis of this particular town, our research emphasizes only one aspect, namely the town’s foundation, which we consider to have been the initiative of Negru Vodă/Thocomer, the first Valachian prince. Thocomer arrived from Transylvania, more precisely from the Fărăgaş County, in a particular historical context, after the death of the Hungarian king Ladislau the IVth. He privileged his loyal companionships, a group of Transylvanian Saxons, by founding the town of Câmpulung, the original capital of the first medieval Romanian state.
