Summary/Abstract: The article is a survey of the most recent American publications on the history of the Catholic Church in the twentieth century. The analysed works are part of the intellectual history, and seek to trace various trends of Catholic thought that culminated during the Second Vatican Council. The analysis of American studies makes it possible for us to indicate the following features of the described approach to the history of the Church: the focus on secular actors, appreciation of trends contesting the orthodoxy and conservative tendencies in the Church as well as the presentation of the experiences of countries in which Catholicism functioned in a dispute with other currents of thought (France, Germany).
