Summary/Abstract: The article aims at describing the principles of operation of a system of collection security and control used in the Library of UPJPII. In the new library building most of the collections are arranged in the open access area, thus there is a need to protect them from potential theft. Security has been ensured by means of RFID technology (Radio Frequency Identification) and labels in UHF Gen 2 standard. The integrated RFID system includes among others: control gates, database server, special application for monitoring traffic passing through the gate and mobile RFID device with dedicated software. Thanks to this technology, the librarian is not only alerted in case of an attempt to carry a book out of the library without authorization, but also knows this book’s exact details. The possibility of control and management of the open stacks collections by means of a mobile RFID device proved to be an additional advantage of the system used (as it allows for full identification of a particular book and searching for a lost item, as well as control of the correctness of arrangement on the shelves and inventory without the necessity of excluding the controlled books from use).
