Summary/Abstract: Citizen science – incorporating lay and public participation in scientific resarch – has over recent years become a very popular mode of science, particularly within the environmnetal sciences. Along with its potential for direct experiential science communication and its promise to enhance science research through the mobilisation of lay expertise, citizen science has also been lauded as a completely new, inclusive and democratic way of performing science. These more lofty aspiration for citizen science can been labelled a “redemption fantasy“ for science; through the construction of a democratic, accountable and community focused science, the past ecological sins of science can be redeemed. This essay will introduce citizen science and the connections between environmentalism and the apocalyptic in order to outline this argument further.
