Summary/Abstract: If a Pantheon of Byzantine military cornmanders were to be formed, which would include both the greatest generals, such as Belisarios, or emperors-generals Nikephoros II Phokas and John I Tzimiskes, and those who were not crowned with glorious victories, e. g. Manuel Kamytzes from the end of the 12th and the first years of the 13th century, an honourable place in that society of the illustrious dead would certainly belong to Alexios Philanthropenos. The more so if we take into consideration the fact that he lived in the period when the power of Byzantine arms was at a low ebb. Viewed in that light, his military exploits - and they were unquestionable - become even more impressive.
