Summary/Abstract: The American historian Padraic Kenney called the Central European events of 1989 a “carnival of revolution”. In his engaging book he deals with the activities of the new opposition movements that gradually formed in the latter half of the 1980s. Their founders, mostly members of the young generation, were remote from, or disinterested in the ideological struggles of the previous generations. They had no illusions regarding the possibility of reforming the political regime into which they were born. They focused on public events, held various demonstrations, hunger strikes, petitions and happenings. Some became legendary. They also included street events organised by the Association for a Merrier Present (Společnost za veselejší současnost), which was established a few months before the fall of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia.
