Summary/Abstract: In recent history, it was General Cemal Madanoğlu who led the military coup on May 27, 1960, which ended the tenyear Democrat Party government and caused the military to be on the agenda of the politics for a long time. The practices of the Democrat Party, especially after the 1957 elections, and its efforts to intimidate the opposition to it were enough to draw the army into politics. In the process leading to coup, Major General Cemal Madanoğlu found a place on the agenda on night of May 27 and Turkey's recent history. A National Unity Committee was established after the overthrow of the Democratic Party government. With the initiative of Cemal Madanoğlu who was elected as president of the committee, a Constitutional Commission consisting of law professors was created. As the first thing in the committee, the demilitarization efforts started. Cemal Madanoğlu endeavored to transfer power to civilians at the earliest possible time. Demilitarization efforts have not yielded results for a while. Discord between the committee members has gradually reached a level that Madanoğlu could not prevent and juntas started to form within the committee. The juntas entered into a struggle, and as a result, 14 members of the committee were liquidated by the initiatives of Madanoğlu. These members, who were sent to passive missions abroad, were also prohibited from entering the country for a while. After all, the committee focused on demilitarization again, but this time the committee dealt with another junta named Armed Forces Union. However, Madanoğlu was late in dissolving this junta and resigned from the committee as the developments were not in the direction he wanted.
