Summary/Abstract: Václav Veber explores the conditions under which communists or other pro- -Soviet parties took power in individual Central European countries. They achieved this in the years following the end of WWII thanks to Stalin’s cohesive tactics, the wide deployment of Soviet advisors, the uncompromising destruction of democratic parties and infiltration of left-wing ones, control of security forces, the defamation of opponents, intimidation and direct violence.
