Summary/Abstract: The paper reviews Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopology and its application to hospital space. Hospital space is not ‘neutral’ as it is the site of a multitude of interpreta-tions and metaphors. These relate in particular to the patients’ physical condition and their recuperation prospects. Hospital space (buildings and architecture) also exerts a strong impact on patients’ emotions and mode of thinking. For thinking has a spatial nature.
