Summary/Abstract: The Pontifical University of John Paul II in Cracow is a continuation of the Pontifical Academy of Theology – a university founded by Pope John Paul II in 1981. The University Archives contain many documents concerning the person and activities of Fr. Karol Wojtyla, later the Archbishop and Pope John Paul II. The manuscript of Fr. Wojtyla’s MA thesis defended in 1948 at the Faculty of Theology of the Jagiellonian University is the oldest and most valuable item stored in the Archives. There are several documents related to the endeavours of Karol Wojtyla as the Archbishop of Cracow to restore the Faculty of Theology, removed by the communist authorities from the structure of the Jagiellonian University. At the same time, the Archbishop sought the acknowledgement of the Faculty of Theology by the Holy See, which recognized its activity within the Higher Seminary in Cracow. The archival records also show the aspiration of the then head of the Archdiocese of Cracow to revive and deepen scientific life not only in the field of theology but also of philosophy and history. This goal was also served by his personnel policy, which culminated in the establishment of the threefaculty Pontifical Academy of Theology (Theology, Philosophy, History of the Church).
