Remarks concerning the strategies of preservation of linguodiversity in the context of biodiversity

Summary/Abstract: The article is concerned with the problem of natural language preservation and maintenance as an important challenge of present-day humanity. It is shown that a big numer of living languages, referred to as ‘linguodiversity’, are facing either dormancy or extinction and are in need of preservation just like the need to preserve ‘biodiversity’, or the existing variability of life on Earth, is at present a major challenge of humanity. It is argued that ecology has worked out a feasible framework for implementing a number of strategies to champion this task and that ecolinguistics may directly benefit from the present shape of ecology and adapt these strategies to the task of the preservation of linguodiversity. Some preservation strategies and ecolinguistic services, based on their ecological analogs, are briefly discussed.
