Summary/Abstract: This work interdisciplinary examines the culture of Roma with special focus to the situation and characteristics of Roma population in Serbia at the beginning of the 21st century. The concept of culture is derived from anthropological perspective of American anthropologists of neo-evolutionist orientation. The starting hypothesis of the work is that the Roma originate from India, in which they formed a homogeneous socio-cultural group, and that the Hindu religion and caste structure of society had greatly influenced the creation of the cultural core of the Roma, manifested in what is called the Romanians (Romanipe). Historical and statistical data show the historical and present socio-cultural status of Roma in Serbia, as well as their most important cultural patterns. In the second part of the article, the hypothesis is defended that the cultural patterns of Roma in Serbia represent a dialectic product of the inherited cultural core and daily rational adjustment to the real external circumstances of the Roma. This paper presents the basis for further theoretical and empirical research of the position of Roma in Serbia. In addition, it can also serve to create future practical policies, which would take greater account of a very complex relationship between factors affecting the situation and culture of Roma.
