Summary/Abstract: While teaching English, what is important is an efficient way of checking whether or not our pupils have understood the content that is taught, e.g. the meaning of grammatical structures or lexical items. Without such understanding, it is impossible for them to use a foreign language correctly or make progress in acquiring further parts of the taught material. Using examples from the English language, this paper discusses the use and formulation of so-called concept questions, which are a highly suitable tool to efficiently check pupils’ understanding of the meaning of the studied grammatical structures and lexical items.
