Summary/Abstract: What is the role of large companies for macroeconomic fluctuations? The article provides a partial answer to this question, considering the influence of large companies on the growth of gross domestic product at the regional level - using Varna and Dobrich districts as illustrative examples. The main hypothesis is that if the firm size distribution is highly skewed and follows a so-called power law, then shocks in the productivity of the largest companies are also transmitted at the macroeconomic level. For Varna district the available data do not support this hypothesis, but for Dobrich district the hypothesis cannot be rejected. The article suggests different mechanisms that could be at the root of these differences.
