Summary/Abstract: Chinese is becoming more popular among Polish people every year, although studying this language is quite atypical for Polish speakers for various reasons. Chinese language students lack a ‘base’, as there is no alphabet they could rely on for practising the reading skills. This article presents issues on teaching Chinese lexis. The outline presents Chinese language complexity, analyses difficulties that students encounter, as well as shows methods of teaching Chinese. An analysis of the above mentioned topics indicates that effectiveness in acquiring new vocabulary mainly depends on linguistic consciousness, which should be trained and developed by multifaceted review of newly introduced characters. Systematic revisions (which should be given more time than e.g. introducing new material) and adjusting methods to Chinese language specificity also play a role in succeeding in learning Chinese.
