Summary/Abstract: This article characterizes the specifics of color in the national painting in the period 1918–1940, identifies the paths of artistic influence of Bessarabian artists, mentions the stylistic landmarks of their creation etc. Among the artists who worked in this chronological segment are N. Gumalic, P. Piscariov, V. Ocushco, A. Climashevschi, P. Shilingovski, L. Arionescu-Baillayre, A. Baillayre, E. Maleshevschi and others. Their activity is influenced by various artistic directions – Russian realistic art and European modernist art with which they became acquainted during their studies and travels. The author determined the color ratio in the painting from the researched period according to the artistic orientation, which is based on warm shades of pale brown (fawn), brown in the case of the influence of Russian art of „peredvijnicist” nature, and shades of green-blue, greenish gray, in the case of the influence of modern European art. From the comparative study, a transition is observed from the type of tonal and caloric contrast from the period of „peredvijnicist” influence, to the one of color – simultaneously, complementary, saturation etc., in „modernist” paintings. Also the informative character of the color in some works is highlighed, based on symbolic valences inspired by Russian literature and painting from the border of the XIX–XX centuries.
