Summary/Abstract: The text is based on an Introduction to the English-French edition of The Dubliners (H. Cixous, Vers une théorie de la cruci-fiction, Paris: Aubier-Flammarion, 1974). Ms. Cixious indicates that there are two mutually opposing motifs in Joyce’s output: an affirmation and a destruction of the Subject. Focusing on analysing the short story The Dead, the French scholar argues that Cruci-fiction, discovered by Joyce in his short story and mastered then on, up to Finnegans Wake – proved to be his own method of achieving a peculiar balance between the said two poles.
