Summary/Abstract: The article critically examines M. V. Lyubichev’s concept of ethnocultural history of the 1st—4th centuries of the foreststeppe zone population between the Dnieper and the basin of the Seversky Donets river. The full text of this concept was published in a monograph in 2019. Particular attention is paid to the problems of origin, chronology and distinction of cultural and chronological groups of the late Zarubintsy horizon, the time of the appearance of the Chernyakhov culture population in the region, correlation of antiquities of the so-called Boromlia horizon and Kiev culture. As a result, it was concluded that the research method used by M. V. Lyubichev, which is based mainly on chronology, led to the simplification of a rather complex historical picture.
