Summary/Abstract: The period 2007-2011 starts with the record levels of foreign direct investment flows (FDI) both inflowing to the host country and outflowing from the country of origin, and it ends − according to international statistics − with a moderate recovery after a deep slump in the years 2008-2010. So a severe quantitative impact of the financial crisis on FDI flows and stocks for both groups of countries has become a prerequisite to verify whether the economic downturn has also resulted in qualitative changes in foreign direct investment broken down by economic activity. To this end, FDI cumulative stocks by economic activities of selected countries of the European Union in 2007 and 2011 were tested, and the reasoning was based on the relative similarity structure indices.
