Summary/Abstract: In 1991 an intensive period of reforming the state and the economy started in India. The reforms concerned liberalization, deregulation and decentralization. They significantly accelerated India’s growth. In the beginning of XXI century India has become fourth economic power in the world, after USA, China and Japan. As a consequence of rapid economic growth, life conditions of Indian society have improved and the size of poverty has decreased. The percentage of poor people diminished from 45% of the society in 1993 to 30% in 2010. However, the reduction of poverty has not run evenly in all Indian states. Between 1993 and 2010 the regional disparity in the level of poverty increased.
