The Visit of Queen Mary of Romania to Paris and London during the 1919-1920 Peace Conference

Summary/Abstract: At the 1919 Peace Conference in Paris, Romania was facing serious difficulties, mainly regarding the official recognition of its new borders. The Banat matter and the ratification of the Acts of Union from Cernăuţi, Chişinău and Alba-Iulia were complex issues on the agenda. The relationship between the Romanian prime-minister Ion I.C. Brătianu and the French prime-minister Georges Clemenceau was not an easy one and their meetings often ended in violent arguments. The same can be said about the relationship between Brătianu and Woodrow Wilson, the American president, the former accusing the latter of being „an impostor” and of trying to monopolize the Romanian oil supplies. Therefore, in Paris, Romania needed a well-known representative, both admired and respected in the political and diplomatic milieu of Paris and London. The one chosen to go to Paris to represent and defend Romania’s interests was Queen Mary.
