Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the possibility of using translation as a tool for teaching Czech to foreigners within monolingual classes. It focuses on project-based learning, problem-solving activities, and working with transfer errors. The authors perceive translation to be an integral part of the process of grasping a foreign language — not as a learning objective on its own, as it is with the grammartranslation method, which the authors consider obsolete. The article argues thattranslation may be used to improve not only linguistic skills but also the socio-cultural knowledge of the students. The article’s conclusions are based upon the authors’ long-term experiences with the Translation Workshop (Laboratorio di traduzione ceco-italiano) organized by Ca’ Foscari University in Venice since the 2016/2017 academic year.
