Summary/Abstract: By means of this article, the author introduces into scientific discourse previously unpublished documents regarding the Bolgrad commune and its population at the time it was part of the United Principalities of Moldova and Walachia (1857–1878). These invaluable documents were first selected by historian and diplomat Vitaly Varatec in the National Archives of Romania and consequentially donated to the National Library of the Republic of Moldova. Among the documents, of notable interest is the list of residents of Bolgrad who in 1860–1861 illegally exited the commune. The list demonstrates that only between 8–28 November 1860, 39 families exited Bolgrad, the majority leaving on November 9 (7 families), on November 16 (6 families), on November 28 (7 families). The exodus continued in the spring-summer of 1861 (in August alone 12 families left Bolgrad). The underlying cause of this mass emigration was the colonists’ reaction to the introduction of government armed forces in Bolgrad (8–10 November 1860). Other documents of high interest contain data about 41 residents, including government employees, who, under the law of 13 June 1874, were granted 10 acres of land each in the communes of Karakurt, Kairaklia, and Tashbunar.
