The Baniabik-Majkop-Novosvobodnaya type axes. The historiographical sketch

Summary/Abstract: The article at hand present the history of the study of the Majkop-Novosvobodnaya-Baniabik type axes, which are one of the most numorous and informative category of products, associated with the Majkop-Novosvobodnaya cultural com- munity. There are four main periods of study: from the first findings to the realization of the Majkop phenomenon (end of 19th – 30s of 20th century); from understanding of the phenomenon to the first concepts (30s-60s of 20th century); from the first concept to the concept of the “Circumpontic metallurgical province” and the borders of the Early Bronze Age (70s-80s of 20th century); from the development of previous periods to the current level of knowledge (90s of 20th century – present days).
