Summary/Abstract: This paper examines previously unidentified characters found in the bottom line of Birch Bark Manuscript 201 ex- tracted from the 15th tier of Nereva Excavation XVII. A.A. Zaliznyak identified this manuscript as one of the manuscripts made by Onfim. The characters in question may be interpreted as digits because of the titlos placed over them. If decrypted based on the South Slavonic (Cyrillic) or Glagolitic numeral alphabet, those characters yield a numerical value within the range between 716 and 719. Adding an implied value in the position of thousands, hey show a date within the range between 6716 and 6719 A.M. which is 1208 to 1211 A.D. according to our modern calendar. However, the date taken from the manuscript does not match the dendrological limits of the 15th tier (1224-1237). Hence, in order to verify the dating, a comparison of wooden artifacts extracted from Excavations XVII and XXVIII was made using correlation and normalized difference methods. Tier dating sexcavation XXVIII were used as a point of depar- ture. The comparison was based on an empirical generalization made by A.V. Artsihovsky. A comparison of the distributions was carried out both visually and through a set of statistical methods. These comparisons revealed that the dating of the dis- tribution both in the 15th tier (which is the object of our inquiry) and in most other tiers runs one or two tiers ahead of the current dendrochronological scale of Nereva excavation. The significance of this research shows that tiers of the same measurement may have different time limits in different excavations. The methods used in this paper enable one to synchronize not only different excavations at Nereva but also excavations carried out in different sites.
