Summary/Abstract: At the end of the 12th century, Gottfried of Viterbo consecrates several chapters of his Pantheon to the imperial insignia. Chaplain of Conrad III, notary of Frederick Barbarossa and Henry VI, Gottfried accomplished several diplomatic missions as well. He wrote several historical works, but his last work, the Pantheon, as its title implies, compares the great kings and emperors to the gods. The description of the Holy Lance stands out of Gottfried’s versified explanation of the imperial insignia in that it the longest poem and the only one that narrates a legend. This paper focuses on the legend narrated by Gottfried and on the extraordinary qualities of the Holy Lance as a weapon.
