Summary/Abstract: This article surveys the rise of Saint Maurice as the patron saint of the German Empire between the tenth and the thirteenth century. It discusses both the textual and the visual tradition, with particular attention to the imperial cult of Saint Maurice and the visual representation of the saint as patron of the Empire on the celebrated Magdeburg ivory tablets. It reviews the victorious and the lost battles of the emperors carrying the Holy Lance, and the expansion of Saint Maurice’s cult in Benedictine abbeys.
