Summary/Abstract: The article presents the idea of care in social activity and pedagogical work of Wanda Szuman. She was an activist and educator associated with Toruń, the co-founder of the Pomeranian Society for the Protection of Children, the aim of which was to protect children and adolescents, and care for orphans. She conducted research on orphaned children, and published its results in pedagogical periodicals such as: Szkoła Specjalna (Special School), Opieka nad Dzieckiem (Child Care), Wychowawca (The Educator) or Życie Dziecka (The Life of a Child). She tried to share her experience gained during her trips to France, England and Belgium with Polish readers. Szuman, both in her activities within the Society and in her writing, was of the opinion that the transfer of orphans to closed establishments should be limited. She was an advocate and propagator of the idea of placing children in foster families and surrounding them with a family atmosphere. She tried to provide readers with the best, already proven models in the field of this important social problem. She was a promoter of the modern concept of caring for an orphaned child.
