Summary/Abstract: This paper attempts to understand the concept of gentleness within the framework of a philosophical pursuit, and therefore relates the presence of this concept in Marcus Aurelius to his Stoic representations of ontology, of the relations between body and soul/mind, and the functions that the last one has in the process of achieving a good life. The moral goals, requirements and conditions involve the persistent form of gentleness, and this is how we can emphasize the particularities of Marcus Aurelius’ standpoint within the frame of Stoicism itself, and also in relation to Plato and to other ancient philosophers, or to Christian thought. The aim of this paper is, however, not only a “technical” or a merely analytical one, but rather an ethical one.
