Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the study is to show, through the example of the Albanians, how the kind of religious national consciousness that arose on a humanist basis in national (Protestant or Catholic) church institutions among Western and Central European nations and within the Orthodox Church organization among the Serbs and the Greeks, was for Balkan peoples where a majority or significant minority of the people belonged to the Catholic Church formulated by missionaries and bishops trained in Italy and directed from Rome. In other words, we can detect the early modern stage of nation-forming, the ‘period of clerical interest’ in the case of the Albanians just as we can for other European nations. Its apparent presence among a Balkan ethnic group that had no previous statehood or even vernacular literacy is further demonstration of the very strong presence and influence of early modern nationalisms in Europe, and should therefore be of great interest in the context of the European development of the national idea.
