Summary/Abstract: In 1606 AD, Polish early baroque poet Gabriel of Wieluń published his collection of twenty short funeral poems entitled Threni, which are devoted to the premature death of Barbara Konopnicka née Karśnicka (ca. 1576-1606). In two instances, he compares the late woman with the female heron (Ardea L.). This wading bird is said to be the symbol of courage, wisdom, prudence and allegiance to the principles of the Catholic Church.
