Summary/Abstract: The Germans from Transylvania managed to hold on to their dominant positions after 1918, economically and socially speaking, especially in the rural areas. In these specific circumstances, the relations between Germans and Romanians were similar to those before 1918. The present study depicts the interwar work relations from several mixed, Romanian-German, communities from the rural and urban areas of three southern Transylvanian counties (Hunedoara, Alba and Sibiu). This research relies on oral history interviews with Romanians (or their descendants) employed in German households as salaried, daily-labourers, or apprentices. Working for Germans was a chance for Romanians to know them closely and to borrow elements of culture and civilization from them. The interviews show that being a maid or a servant in a German household equated to attending school.
