Summary/Abstract: The bench is one of the oldest furniture items. It is found in archaeological records and descriptions of travelers. There is an obvious interest in how these pieces appeared and evolved, what were their derivatives (long chairs with and without backs, beds, etc.), which are the artistic features of this type of furniture. This article aims to answer all these questions, taking into account the specificity of the area. With the help of those interested in the ethnographic and historical past of our land, we have the opportunity to admire and research, in several museums in the country, several refurbished or preserved pieces of furniture, including the bench and their derivatives. Field research conducted in all regions of the Republic of Moldova (in more than 70 museums, and rural households, 2-3 localities in each district), has allowed the detection of benches that are rarely found in people's homes, but which have practically disappeared. The analysis of historical data, related to the information from the literature, as well as to the location of the benches, in the pantry or the big house, determined and allowed a classification, according to their form, function, decoration. Some bear special artistic features, which deserve to be highlighted and presented to the general public. This classification allows us to capitalize on and promote our cultural heritage.
