Summary/Abstract: In 2012-2014, the archaeological investigations carried out in Soroca did not provide conclusive evidence that would confirm the years of construction of the stone fortress. This article examines the most important hypotheses of dating the Soroca fortress such as: Genoese (supported by Dimitrie Cantemir, C. Stamati, O.G. Lecca, S. Panaitescu, A. Nakko, P.N. Batiushkov, Z. Arbure, etc.), Moldavian – the time of the reign of Stephen the Great (supported by N. Iorga, I. Nistor, Șt. Ciobanu, K. Rodnin, G. Diaconu, T. Nesterov, S. Iosipescu, R. Iosipescu, S. Musteaţă, I. Tentiuc, etc.), Moldavian – during the reign of Petru Rareş (supported by A. Lapedatu, V. Vătăşianu, V. Drăguţ, V. Voiţehovschi, Gh.F. Cebotarenco, Gh. Curinschi Vorona, etc.). The Soroca stone fortress is the only Moldavian fortress conceived according to a predetermined plan, perfectly circular, with fascinating geometry. It illustrates a brilliant example of central type fortifications with circular plan, using the defensive system with flanking towers. No fortress built by Ştefan cel Mare (Stephen the Great) is compared with it by "regularity" that contributes to the hypothetical "placement" of the Soroca stone fortress for the later temporal segment, probably during the reign of Petru Rareș.
