LEGENDS ABOUT PETER THE GREAT IN THE OLONETS PROVINCE GAZETTE

Summary/Abstract: Reforms of Peter the Great who repeatedly visited the Olonets Province left a deep imprint on the folk historical prose. The article attempts to systematize information about the historical legends about Peter the Great published on the pages of a Petrozavodsk newspaper The Olonets Province Gazette in the XIX and the early XX centuries. The relevance of the article is due to the insufficient study of the legends about Peter the Great published in the unofficial section of the local periodical. There were revealed 86 legends published from 1838 to 1905. The majority of them are narrative or non-narrative stories about everyday life. The article examines the role of the newspaper’s contributors and other employees, as well as the members of the Olonets Province Statistical Committee in collecting information about Peter the Great’s stay in the Olonets region, and establishes links between publications about the Emperor and various significant dates. Legends about Peter the Great preserve both original and traditional features that this genre had developed throughout its history. The author examines a set of motifs, plots and their variants, as well as functions associated with this historical person. The article provides a separate analysis of the folklore image of Peter the Great in legends. It identifies the main types (functions) of this character and his mythological and fairy-tale features, and characterizes the largest cycle of Vytegra legends about the Emperor. The appendix to the article contains a summary table of all texts about Peter the Great published in The Olonets Province Gazette.
